Tucked away in South Florida’s vibrant dining scene, Old Lisbon offers something rare: a truly culinary experience that feels less like dinner and more like an escape to Portugal’s capital. For tourists seeking authenticity beyond the typical beachfront fare, this hidden gem delivers an unforgettable taste of Lisbon…without the jet lag.

For locals, Old Lisbon has been a favourite since the opening of their Coral Way location in 1991, however, for tourists that call Hollywood and Hallandale home, we had the opportunity to dine at their newest location in Aventura, which opened in 2024.

From the moment you step inside, this location sets the tone with warm, understated elegance, evoking the charm of a traditional Portuguese tasca. Father and son owners and operators, Carlos Silva and Carlos Jr., managed to create an unpretentious restaurant, deeply rooted in tradition, which immediately signals you’re in for something special.

For 35 years, Old Lisbon’s menu has celebrated the bold flavors, time-honoured techniques, and Portugal’s deep connection to the sea. Signature dishes showcase the richness of coastal Portugal: perfectly grilled fish, tender octopus, and, of course, bacalhau: salted cod prepared in multiple traditional styles. Each plate is executed with precision and respect for the heritage it represents, balancing simplicity with depth of flavor.

On our visit, we had to try the classics: Grilled Portuguese sardines, followed by seafood rice with shrimp, clams, mussels, calamari and fish as well as the grilled octopus. With every bite, we realized exactly why regulars call Old Lisbon’s fish and seafood among the tastiest and freshest in South Florida.

Having visited Lisbon recently, I felt like I had found a hidden gem tucked in Alfama.

Naturally, our visit was not complete until we indulged in dessert, particularly the iconic pasteis de nata. These Portuguese custard tarts arrive warm, with a perfectly caramelized top and a flaky, buttery crust. Paired with a glass of port, they provide a fittingly finale to an incredible meal. While we opted for the classic Portuguese dessert, the menu is ripe with other favourites from home, such as Molotoff, a Portuguese meringue or pears poached in Port wine.

In an era where we’re often rushed at meals and service has taken a backseat, what truly set Old Lisbon apart was its atmosphere and the genuine hospitality. Staff are eager to guide guests through the menu, often sharing insights into the origins of dishes or recommending pairings that enhance the experience. It’s the kind of place where you feel welcomed, not just served.

For tourists visiting South Florida, Old Lisbon is a perfect change of pace. With three locations: two in Miami (Coral Way and South Miami) as well as their newest in Aventura, you’re never too far away from an evening like no other. All restaurants are fully accessible.

Old Lisbon manages to capture the essence of Portugal: its flavors, its warmth, and its soul. For anyone looking to experience Lisbon only a few miles from the A1A, this is as close as it gets. arguably one of the best dining experiences the region has to offer.
