Students to attend May 30 game at Saputo Stadium

Impact Teams Up With the EMSB for Year Twelve of Stay-In-School Program

Members of the Impact have been visiting schools to remind young students of the importance of studying, persevering and building self-confidence in order to succeed. The traditional “EMSB Night” will take place on Tuesday, May 30 (7:30 pm) when the Impact hosts the Vancouver Whitecaps at Saputo Stadium. This is part of the Amway Canadian Championship, which involves the three top professional clubs in Canada, in the race to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League. That is an international competition between professional clubs from North America, Central America and the Caribbean. 

More than 2,250 tickets have been sold to EMSB students and staff for the game. Before the game the EMSB’s presence will be recognized and two students will be presented with the Tony Licursi Bursary, valued at $500 each. Mr. Licursi was the team’s statistician and a devoted member of the James Lyng High School Alumni Association. He passed away a number of years ago. The award recognizes excellence in school and sports, preferably soccer. This year’s winners are Christian Weiman from Royal Vale School in NDG and Simona Lombardo Varisco from Leonardo Da Vinci Academy in RDP.

CHRISTIAN WEIMAN

Christian is in Grade 9 at Royal Vale School in N.D.G and is recognized by his teachers as an exceptionally bright, giving and mature individual who possesses a continued resolve to improve himself. Athletically, Christian is an exceptional soccer player with a balance of skills and leadership. He is also a competitive mid-distance runner. Overall, he is a young man who understands that there is more to soccer than winning. He recognizes that hard work, teamwork, unity, integrity are all just as important as the score at the end of the game. He is the ideal player and student that every coach and teacher wants to have.

SIMONA LOMBARDO

Simona Lombardo Varisco is in Grade 6 at Leonardo Da Vinci Academy in R.D.P. Simona is a well-rounded student who excels academically, consistently ranking at the top of her class in all subject areas. Athletically, she belongs to a local soccer team and is a competitive gymnast. Additionally, she represents Leonardo Da Vinci Academy on their track team at the annual GMAA Halo Road Race. Both her teachers and peers recognize her as respectful, polite and an overall positive influence in the school community.
